LNCC® Certification

The Legal Nurse Consultant Certified (LNCC®) credential, awarded by the American Legal Nurse Consultant Certification Board (ALNCCB), recognizes registered nurses who meet specific eligibility requirements and demonstrate advanced knowledge in legal nurse consulting through a national certification exam.

Who Is Eligible for LNCC Certification?

To qualify to take the LNCC certification exam, candidates must:

Be a licensed registered nurse (RN)
Meet experience requirements in legal nurse consulting
Pass a comprehensive exam covering legal principles, nursing practice, and consulting skills

Purpose of the LNCC Program

The LNCC certification is not intended to define who may practice as a legal nurse consultant. Instead, it promotes excellence by:

Establishing a benchmark of professional knowledge
Documenting individual performance and competency
Supporting the growth and credibility of the legal nurse consulting profession

What Does LNCC Certification Mean?

Nurses who earn the LNCC credential may use the LNCC designation after their names, signifying their expertise and professionalism in the field of legal nurse consulting. This certification validates a nurse’s knowledge and experience against a nationally recognized standard.

Maintaining Your LNCC Credential

LNCC certification is valid for five years. To maintain certification, nurses must:

Recertify by examination, or
Complete 60 contact hours in nursing and legal nurse consulting

National Accreditation

The LNCC program is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Specialty Nursing Certification (ABSNC) and recognized by ANCC Magnet Program for Nursing Excellence. This accreditation confirms that the LNCC certification meets rigorous national standards for specialty nursing certification programs.

Exam Application & Fees

The LNCC® exam is offered during two testing windows throughout the year. The exam can be completed at test sites nationwide by Computer Based Testing (CBT) and Live Remote Proctoring.

About the LNCC Exam

The Exam Details

There is only one ALNCCB certification examination for RNs. The examination is based on role delineations and surveys of practitioners, which define the scope of practice, and the knowledge and skills required to function in the field of legal nurse consulting. All examination items are written by certified individuals with expertise in the field of legal nurse consultants. ALNCCB and Prometric (our third-party testing vendor) ensure that all items are reviewed for bias and sensitivity prior to assigning any items for scoring.

Examination Content

The LNCC examination each consist of 200 questions, based on an analysis of legal nurse consulting practice. It is designed to test the candidate's ability to apply legal nurse consulting knowledge. Questions are in the form of single response multiple choice and case studies; a reading passage is followed by one or more questions related to the passage. Candidates have four hours to complete their examination.

Questions for the exam are reviewed, referenced and validated by the ALNCCB Item Writers Task Force and edited by the testing company, SMT, for construction, grammatical correctness and clarity. The exam can be taken at a testing center or at a designated location (ex. at home) with a remote proctor.

Eligibility Criteria

To become a Legal Nurse Consultant Certified (LNCC®), the ALNCCB requires that a candidate meets all eligibility criteria, complete the application, pay all fees, and achieve a passing score on the certification examination. No individual shall be excluded from the opportunity to participate in ALNCCB's certification program on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age, or disability.

To be eligible to take the examination, candidates must have the following at the time of application:

current licensure as a registered nurse in the United States or its territories, with a full and unrestricted license
a minimum of five years of experience practicing as a registered nurse
evidence of 2000 hours of legal nurse consulting experience within the past five years.

Those who meet the eligibility criteria and successfully complete the examination will earn the Legal Nurse Consultant Certified (LNCC®) credential.

Eligibility Criteria Guidelines-Hours

The following guidelines are intended to provide a framework for defining experience that meets the eligibility criteria for LNCC certification. They are based on the Scope and Standards for the Legal Nurse Consulting Practice (October 1995) published by the AALNC. The activities that satisfy the eligibility requirement for 2000 hours of legal nurse consulting experience must meet all three of the following criteria:

The activities must be performed at the request of a client (e.g., a law firm, insurance company, hospital, or other agency involved in legal processes), and
The activities must be related to claims or cases in which the education and experience of a registered nurse are necessary, and
The activities must be of the kind that is generally considered billable.

Examples of these activities are:

Collecting, organizing, and reviewing medical records and other relevant healthcare or legal documents.
Summarizing and analyzing the information in medical records and other relevant healthcare or legal documents.
Assessing issues of liability, causation, and/or damages.
Researching relevant healthcare-related literature, guidelines, standards, regulations, etc.
Communicating verbally or in writing with clients, appropriate parties, experts, and witnesses.
Identifying, locating, evaluating, and conferring with experts.
Conferring with clients and appropriate parties regarding case strategies.
Drafting documents or other materials to be used as attorney work product or as evidence.
Attending interviews, depositions, hearings, mediations, arbitrations, or trials.
Contacting and conferring with vendors to develop demonstrative evidence or to collect costs of health care services, supplies, and/or equipment.
Testifying at depositions, hearings, arbitrations, or trials.
Training or supervising other nurses in the practice of legal nurse consulting.
Explaining the theory and practice of relevant health sciences or healthcare issues to legal professionals and other members of the legal team.
Instructing other healthcare professionals in the aspects of legal liability pertaining to their own practice.

Activities which may be potentially billable but may NOT be used to satisfy this eligibility requirement are:

Traveling to and from sites to perform any of the above activities.
Accounting and billing as part of managing a business.
Marketing as part of managing a business.
Solely waiting to give testimony.

All IQT Testing sites are independently operated from Prometric and therefore they update their calendar on a month to month basis (most often at the beginning of each month). For this reason, we suggest not attempting to schedule your exam prior to one month before your exam in order to see the most up-to-date testing locations offered.

Prometric will provide you with your testing location' s address and driving directions with your test confirmation. Your test confirmation will be sent to you via email immediately after your appointment has been made.

LNCC Examination Process

The certification examination is based on an analysis of legal nurse consulting practice. The practice analysis and the examination were developed with the assistance of SMT. The test consists of 200 multiple choice items and is approximately 4 hours in length. It is designed to test the candidate's ability to apply legal nurse consulting knowledge. ADA Accommodations and Exam Requests

ALNCCB and Prometric comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and strive to ensure that no individual with a disability is deprived of the opportunity to take the examination solely by reason of that disability. Prometric (ALNCCB Testing Vendor) will provide reasonable accommodations for candidates with disabilities. Accommodations will be granted for candidates that choose to take their exam at a test center or through remote proctoring, there may be situations where candidates will have to test at a center in order to receive the approved accommodations.

Reasonable accommodations provide candidates with disabilities a fair and equal opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skill in the essential functions being assessed by the examination. Reasonable accommodations are decided based on the individual’ s specific request, disability, documentation submitted, and appropriateness of the request. Reasonable accommodations do not include steps that fundamentally alter the purpose or nature of the examination.

It is recommended that requests for accommodations are submitted in writing to ALNCCB at least 45 days prior to the preferred testing date. Requests which are later than 30 days before the candidate’ s preferred testing date, might not be approved.
