Maintaining Your LNCC® Certification

Renewing your LNCC® certification is a powerful investment in your professional credibility and continued growth as a legal nurse consultant. You may renew your credential through either:

  • Examination, or
  • Contact hour renewal, with 60 approved credits, which encourages ongoing learning and professional development.

The contact hour renewal system is designed to support LNCCs in engaging with professional development activities that strengthen their legal nurse consulting practice and build upon the foundational knowledge demonstrated during initial certification.
To maintain LNCC® certification, candidates must demonstrate continuing competence, defined by the ongoing commitment of a registered nurse to integrate and apply knowledge, skills, and judgment alongside the attitudes, values, and ethics required to practice safely, effectively, and responsibly within their designated role, patient population, and/or setting.

Acceptable Contact Hours

You may earn contact hours from continuing education, academic coursework, presentations, publications and AALNC/ALNCCB volunteer roles. You may use any combination of contact hours for a total of 60 contact hours. Click here to view the list of eligible activities and criteria for recertification credit.

LNCC Recertification Criteria

LNCCs must recertify every 5 years.  Certification expires with a universal date each year on October 31st. Recertification must be submitted prior to October 31st, and meet the criteria below. This information is also referenced in the Recertification Handbook:

  1. Have a current, unrestricted RN license
  2. Have evidence of 2000 hours of legal nurse consulting practice within the 5 years prior to renewal, at the time of application
  3. Complete one of the following:

Rationale:

Contact hours should provide a knowledge or skill that is essential to practicing as a legal nurse consulting and be approved by a legitimate continuing education provider. The knowledge imparted should enable the legal nurse consultant to function effectively as a legal nurse consultant in a variety of practice settings.

After review of your submitted recertification application, if it is determined that insufficient contact hours were submitted the candidates will be notified. If it is prior to October 31, the candidate will be allowed to earn additional contact hours to meet all requirements by the end of that year.

LNCC Recertification Deadlines

To maintain your LNCC® or LNCC-R® credential, recertification applications must be submitted to the American Legal Nurse Consultant Certification Board (ALNCCB):

  • By October 31, five years after your initial certification or most recent recertification.
  • Extended Deadline: Applications submitted between November 1–30 will be accepted with a $100 late fee.
  • Final Cutoff: Applications received after November 30 will not be accepted. To regain certification, you must reapply and successfully pass the LNCC® examination.

Certificants who do not meet the recertification requirements will lose their certified status and must discontinue use of the LNCC® credential.

Review and appeal:

A review process and an appeal procedure are available for candidates whose applications for recertification by contact hours have been denied or for those whose certifications have been revoked. The LNCC-Retired designation is a meaningful way to honor your legacy in legal nurse consulting.  As a retired certificant, you may:

  • Continued Recognition of Your Credential
    You retain the honor of your LNCC® achievement even after stepping away from active practice. LNCC‑R® signals your long‑standing expertise and contribution to the field.
  • Use of the LNCC‑R Designation
    You may use LNCC‑Retired or LNCC‑R® on résumés, biographies, professional listings, and volunteer roles to reflect your credentialed background.
  • No Ongoing CE or Practice Requirements
    LNCC‑R® status removes the need for continuing education, practice hours, or recertification cycles—offering a simplified, permanent recognition.
  • Connection to the Legal Nurse Consulting Community
    You remain part of the credentialed LNC community, preserving your professional identity and legacy within AALNC and ALNCCB.
  • Acknowledgment of Career Achievement
    LNCC‑R® formally honors your years of service, expertise, and commitment to excellence in legal nurse consulting.

    Retired certificants may continue to participate in select volunteer opportunities, committees, or mentorship roles where active practice is not required.

    Your LNCC‑Retired designation is maintained in ALNCCB records, ensuring continued recognition for employers, colleagues, and professional organizations.

Eligibility Requirements to apply:

  • Current or previous LNCC Certification.
  • Retired/Retiring from active legal nurse consulting practice with no plans to return to a full, part-time, or per diem position.

  • The applicant must submit the LNCC-Retired Credential Application form
  • The application fee of $75, click here to submit payment.
  • The LNCC-R designation is to be renewed every five years.
  • Upon approval, a retired designation certificate will be emailed to you.

Please note:
If you choose to return to active practice as a legal nurse consultant, you can no longer use the LNCC-R credential and will need to meet the current eligibility requirements for initial LNCC certification, in order to use the LNCC designation.
