LNCC Certification Eligibility Hours
Answer: Your management experience alone would not qualify for you to sit for the initial LNCC exam.
The activities that satisfy the eligibility requirement for 2000 hours of legal nurse consulting experience in the past 5 years must meet all three of the following criteria:
- The activities must be performed at the request of a client (e.g., a law firm, insurance company, hospital, or other agency involved in legal processes), and
- The activities must be related to claims or cases in which the education and experience of a registered nurse are necessary, and
- The activities must be of the kind that is generally considered billable

Answer:
Examples of these activities are:
- Collecting, organizing, and reviewing medical records and other relevant healthcare or legal documents.
- Summarizing and analyzing the information in medical records and other relevant healthcare or legal documents.
- Assessing issues of liability, causation, and/or damages.
- Researching relevant healthcare-related literature, guidelines, standards, regulations, etc.
- Communicating verbally or in writing with clients, appropriate parties, experts, and witnesses.
- Identifying, locating, evaluating, and conferring with experts.
- Conferring with clients and appropriate parties regarding case strategies.
- Drafting documents or other materials to be used as attorney work product or as evidence.
- Attending interviews, depositions, hearings, mediations, arbitrations, or trials.
- Contacting and conferring with vendors to develop demonstrative evidence or to collect costs of health care services, supplies, and/or equipment.
- Testifying at depositions, hearings, arbitrations, or trials.
- Training or supervising other nurses in the practice of legal nurse consulting.
- Explaining the theory and practice of relevant health sciences or healthcare issues to legal professionals and other members of the legal team.
- Instructing other healthcare professionals in the aspects of legal liability pertaining to their own practice.
- A formal internship or clinical practicum program with work on active client cases and consist of activities that would generally be considered billable hours.

Activities which may be potentially billable but may NOT be used to satisfy this eligibility requirement are:
- Traveling to and from sites to perform any of the above activities.
- Accounting and billing as part of managing a business.
- Marketing as part of managing a business.
- Solely waiting to give testimony.
- Working clinically

LNCC Initial Testing Fees
- AALNC Member: $360
- Non-Member: $495
Answer: The work you perform on actual cases, doing specific legal nurse consultant billable tasks, under the employment of an organization can be used toward the 2000 hours needed to sit for the LNCC exam and recertification. A lawyer vs a paralegal makes no difference.
Draft a list of your activities/tasks you would like to include in your 2000 hours. Use the LNCC Certification page/Eligibility information to review your activities for approved hours. If you have additional questions, please reach out to info@aalnc.org and we will review the hours with you.
LNCC Recertification Questions
Answer:
Recertification Fees:
AALNC Members: $325
Non-members: $450
Answer: You will need to submit 60 contact hours that meet the published criteria during the 5 years prior to your recertification. These hours can consist of hours that are a mix of nursing, legal, risk management, life care planning, and quality. The criteria explain the max number of hours in the different categories. Also, you can obtain contact hours for AALNC or ALNCCB Board service, presentations, and academic classes.
Answer: You will need to submit evidence of 60 contact hours in the 5 years prior to your recertification date.
Answer: If you miss the October 31st date for recertification, you will have until November 30th to submit your application for recertification, with a $100 late fee. Any applications submitted after November 30th will not be accepted.
Answer: After your recertification application is complete and reviewed, ALNCCB staff will double check your payment was submitted. If payment is still needed, an invoice will be sent to secure payment.
If additional contact hours are needed, or you have been chosen for an audit, ALNCCB staff will contact you to additional steps.
After payment, in the next 4-7 days, you will receive an email with your certification and congratulatory letter. Also, we will mail you a copy of the certificate in the following few weeks.

Answer: No. You may submit your recertification application anytime in the year your LNCC expires.
Answer: In the Recertification application there will be an attestation to the number of hours worked in the past 5 years. If there is an audit, you will need to submit evidence of the 2000 hours working as a legal nurse consultant in the past 5 years.
